Morgan’s Frightening Experience
At 20, Fairchild faced an alarming situation while visiting her sister in 1970. Recalling the event, she said, ‘I’m walking up at two o’clock in the afternoon, broad daylight, no reason to be scared.’ Despite knowing not to engage strangers on the street, two men approached her. They were approximately over six feet tall and quickly abducted her.
Fairchild called out for help as she was dragged into a waiting cab. Passersby, assuming she was involved in illegal activity, ignored her cries. Inside the cab, separated by thick plexiglass from the driver, she learned her captors’ intentions. One was a pimp and the other a drug pusher.
Using Humor as a Defense
Maintaining composure, Fairchild responded with wisecracks each time her abductors threatened her. Her ability to make them laugh led one to suggest freeing her. Eventually, they paid the driver to take her wherever she wanted. She returned to her sister’s apartment, staying inside for three days.
Fairchild’s quick thinking surprised her as she relied on humor to mask her fear and navigate the threatening encounter. ‘It was like an improvisation class,’ she noted, using humor to deflate a dangerous situation.
