Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid announced that it’s unlikely quarterback Patrick Mahomes will participate in their preseason opener against the Rams. Mahomes might even skip all three exhibition games. This decision comes after Mahomes underwent surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left knee in December.
Mahomes has shown remarkable progress in his rehabilitation. He completed the offseason program and arrived at training camp on schedule. Dr. Dan Cooper, the surgeon who operated on Mahomes, cleared him to practice without limitations late last month.
“There’s a pretty good chance I don’t play him,” Reid stated. “Percentages are leaning that way. I don’t know if I will play him the second or third game, but percentages probably lean against doing that.”
Despite Mahomes’ extensive experience reducing the necessity for preseason play, his competitive drive may push for limited snaps in the second game against Tampa Bay. Mahomes expressed eagerness to experience game contact to affirm his return to football.
The Chiefs have a robust roster of quarterbacks needing preseason reps. They acquired veteran Justin Fields from the Jets to be Mahomes’ primary backup. Fields is looking to adapt to the new offense. Garrett Nussmeier, an LSU alumnus selected in the seventh draft round, is also in need of game time.
“We’ve got new people behind (Mahomes) that need some work,” Reid indicated. “The more reps they get, the better.”
The Chiefs have additional players sidelined by injuries. Notably, offensive guard Trey Smith consulted a hip specialist this week. Reid reassured that Smith’s condition is not severe. Other injured players include defensive end Ashton Gillotte, linebacker Jeffrey Bassa, linebacker Drue Tranquill, wide receiver Xavier Worthy, defensive back L’Jarius Sneed, and cornerback Mansoor Delane. Their injuries do not seem to be long-term issues.
Wide receiver Cyrus Allen, picked in the fifth round, returned to practice after a shin bruise but avoided contact drills.
“He did a good job when he was back in there, so that’s a positive,” Reid commented. “He’s at all the meetings. He’s focused in. He wants to get out there. He doesn’t want to miss. He’s been working hard. We’ll just ease him back in, like I said.”
