Thanedar, who narrowly won the seat in 2022 by self-funding his campaign, has faced criticism since. Initially, a progressive, Thanedar parted ways with the Democratic Socialists of America in 2023 due to disagreements over support for Israel. Despite criticism, he recently received endorsements from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other Democratic leaders.
