This summer represents a significant shift for fans of the Grateful Dead, affectionately known as Deadheads. For the first time in many years, the band lacks a central focal point in its musical universe. Despite the band’s last performance in 1995, the Grateful Dead’s influence continues to inspire both new musicians and fans.
The enduring appeal of the Grateful Dead can be traced through the cosmic trail of music and folklore they left behind. This influence persists, captivating emerging generations. However, with no singular center defining the band now, the community faces the question: What lies ahead for Deadheads?
In pursuit of answers, NPR Music’s Isabella Gomez Sarmiento and Felix Contreras embarked on a journey earlier this year. Their goal was to explore the current and future state of the Grateful Dead community. Coinciding with the ‘Days Between’ — from August 1, marking Jerry Garcia’s birth, to August 9, the anniversary of his passing — NPR is sharing a series of stories, interviews, and podcasts. This content aims to uncover the factors that continue to attract individuals to the band’s legacy, as well as insights from fans and musicians dedicated to preserving and advancing the Grateful Dead’s heritage.
