European Wildfires Lead to Major Evacuations in Spain and France

Wildfires are spreading rapidly across Spain and France, resulting in the evacuation of over 250,000 people. A significant fire threatens France’s renowned Bordeaux wine region, prompting Spain to declare a national emergency. In response, France has enlisted military assistance, and the Tour de France has been shortened as firefighters continue to battle these extensive blazes.

George Clooney and his family are among those impacted. They evacuated their home in Brignoles, located in France’s Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, as fires threatened sizable areas around the Mediterranean. Clooney’s representative confirmed this to People, sharing that the couple sent a letter to Brignoles Mayor Didier Brémond. The letter expressed concern for the safety of the community and their commitment to assist in rebuilding efforts.

“Dear Didier, At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment,” the letter stated. They further emphasized their love for Brignoles and their intention to aid in the community’s recovery.

Reports indicate that as of Wednesday, a separate, uncontained fire, approximately four times the size of Paris, is ablaze in southwestern France. Meanwhile, in Brignoles, 3,000 residents have been evacuated. In southern Europe, extreme heat, drought, and powerful winds have resulted in the deaths of three firefighters in Greece.

Across France and Spain, over 300,000 people, including residents and tourists, have been forced to leave their homes. On Wednesday, temperatures in France’s Gironde region soared to nearly 104 degrees. This soaring heat led to the evacuation of approximately 220,000 people at its height, although many have since returned. However, tens of thousands remain displaced.

George Clooney had previously expressed his desire for a quieter life for his family, away from Hollywood’s intense spotlight. The family resides on a farm in France, offering a more grounded upbringing for their children. Clooney highlighted concerns about raising children in Los Angeles and the invasive nature of fame.
