In the early hours of Sunday, Israeli settlers launched assaults on Palestinian villages in the occupied West Bank, resulting in the burning of two mosques and graffiti being scrawled on various buildings, as reported by Palestinian officials. This event occurred after a confrontation on Friday, during which four Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers, including a security coordinator for an Israeli settlement, lost their lives. The incident took place near the Palestinian village of Tal, close to Nablus.
The encounter started when armed settlers approached Tal, prompting villagers to come out and engage. Video footage suggests a Palestinian individual seized a settler’s weapon. Local Palestinian authorities accused the settlers of instigating the conflict. The Israeli military reported that shots were exchanged by both parties. Children were seen standing outside a mosque in Qusra, a village in the West Bank, which was allegedly set ablaze by settlers.
This violence is part of a larger pattern of conflicts this year involving settlers and Palestinians. According to data from the U.N. and the Palestinian Authority, these clashes have resulted in numerous Palestinian deaths and injuries.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, facing an upcoming election, has called for a substantial security operation to combat what he terms terrorism against Israeli civilians. He reinforced military units in the West Bank and halted leave for troops. Meanwhile, members of Netanyahu’s cabinet, like the far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, have been advocating for the annexation of the West Bank, an area taken by Israel in the 1967 Middle East conflict.
Reports from Palestinian officials indicate that multiple Palestinian villages throughout the West Bank suffered attacks by settlers on Sunday morning. Abdel Azim Wadi, the head of the village council in Qusra, reported that settlers set fire to a newly built mosque in his village. ‘The mosque was near completion and ready for worship. It was already furnished,’ he told a news agency, mentioning that Hebrew slogans were painted on its walls, including threats of ‘Jewish revenge’ and references to an Israeli individual killed near Tal.
The Palestinian Authority, which governs parts of the West Bank including the location of Friday’s shooting, described the attacks as a systematic assault on Palestinians. ‘State-backed terrorist settler activity is becoming systematic across the West Bank,’ declared the Palestinian prime minister’s office on social media.
The Israeli military, upon sending troops to Qusra, observed graffiti and arson traces and are actively pursuing suspects. They emphasized that any harm to religious venues is strongly condemned, asserting that the security forces would remain committed to maintaining peace and order in the region.
An Israeli military representative highlighted that such acts of violence distract the defense forces from their main goals of defense and counter-terrorism in an already complex situation. Over the weekend, forces detained over 130 individuals, including those involved in arms trafficking, members of Hamas, individuals inciting violence, and terrorists preparing for attacks.
Separately, Palestinian sources noted that settlers attempted to ignite a mosque near Kour, southeast of Tulkarm, and attacked laborers at a stone-cutting workshop in Kafr Malik, near Ramallah. Farid Jiyousi, from the Kour village council, revealed that three settlers aimed to set the mosque on fire at dawn, but worshipers managed to extinguish the blaze before it caused further damage. This attack was their village’s first experience with such aggression, he added.
The Israeli security measures extended throughout the weekend, leading to the arrest of approximately 60 Palestinians from Saturday night, as documented by the Palestinian Prisoners Club.
The international community, including several countries and United Nations organizations, largely deems Israeli settlements in the West Bank illegal, a stance Israel contests. Palestinians aim for the West Bank to serve as the cornerstone of a future sovereign state. Israel, on the other hand, refers to historical and biblical affiliations to justify settlement expansion. Under Netanyahu’s administration, settlement activities have accelerated significantly.
