Valparaiso University President’s Vision
In December, Rev. Brian Konkol expressed that presiding as Valparaiso University’s president was his dream job. Now, halfway through his first academic year, he still feels the same way. The university’s enrollment and donations are improving after a tough period.
Konkol joked about the notion that being a university president is among the most challenging jobs globally, saying, “I didn’t get that memo.” Sitting in his office, still settling in, he shared his enthusiasm for his role.
Challenges Faced by Valparaiso University
Valparaiso University has struggled with maintaining enrollment over past years. Faculty and staff cuts, the closure of its law school, and changes in academic programs were part of the challenge. Nationwide controversies, such as selling significant artwork for renovating dormitories, added to the trials.
A vote of no confidence was passed on Konkol’s predecessor, José Padilla, forcing him into retirement after five years.
Despite challenges, fundraising has surged by 80%, high employment rates for graduates, and impressive undergraduate completion rates bolster the institution’s optimism.
Enrollment Growth and Strategies
In collaboration with LeAnn Hughes, Senior VP for Enrollment and Marketing, Konkol witnessed an 80% increase in undergraduate enrollment deposits for the first time in ten years. With around 680 new students, Valpo surpassed several national averages. Hughes attributed the figures to proactive outreach, including personal connections via social media.
Statistics from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center underline Valpo’s successful gains compared to other institutions.
Strategic Plans and International Outreach
Hughes plans to expand international student enrollment. The admissions office is sending staff to India, exploring partnerships to enhance opportunities. Hughes noted the timing and creating these opportunities are essential.
Community Engagement and Leadership
Konkol, who earlier served at Syracuse University, embraced living in student dorms and rotating office locations, enhancing his connection with students, faculty, and staff.
Building Communication and Engagement
Professor Bharath Ganesh Babu, President of the Faculty Senate, emphasized improved open communication within the university community. He commended Konkol’s willingness to listen and engage.
Babu praised Konkol’s sincerity and commitment to the university’s mission under Lutheran values, focusing on “building lives for good.”
