The college football coaching carousel was particularly crowded last year. A total of 33 programs decided to change their head coaches during the offseason. The influx of funds through NIL contracts seems to reduce patience with underperforming leaders. Curt Cignetti’s victory in the national championship with Indiana, achieved in his second season, increases the pressure on other coaches to succeed quickly.
All the programs with newly appointed coaches aim to improve under new leadership as the fall season approaches. Below are three college football programs likely to experience a breakthrough with their new head coaches.
1. Florida – Jon Sumrall
Jon Sumrall has rekindled excitement at Florida early in his tenure and has already gained the interest of new recruits. He achieved quick success at his previous roles with Troy and Tulane. Last season, he led Tulane’s Green Wave to reach the College Football Playoff (CFP).
The Gators ended their 2025 season on a low note, finishing with a record of 4-8 after dismissing Billy Napier during a lackluster 3-4 start. With Sumrall at the helm, Florida is expected to significantly increase their wins this fall. However, a CFP run will likely require further resources for recruiting and the transfer portal come 2027.
2. LSU – Lane Kiffin
LSU brought in Lane Kiffin to steer the team back on track after Brian Kelly’s faltering stint. Kiffin previously guided Ole Miss to the CFP. He transitioned to coaching the Tigers before the playoffs began.
LSU has extended considerable resources to Kiffin for assembling a competitive roster. While winning a national championship might still be a challenge this season, the Tigers are positioned to compete for the SEC title and aim for a CFP appearance.
3. Oklahoma State – Eric Morris
Oklahoma State has maintained a low profile this offseason, mainly due to their disappointing 1-11 season in 2025. Despite this, new head coach Eric Morris offers hope; he led North Texas to a commendable 11-2 last season. The team reached the American Conference championship, only to fall to Sumrall’s Tulane 34-21.
With star quarterback Drew Mestemaker transferring to Oklahoma State from North Texas, anticipation is high. Mestemaker boasts impressive stats with 4,379 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions last year. While winning the Big 12 might be a stretch, the Cowboys are on the cusp of a notable resurgence this fall.
