The Carolina Panthers faced a setback as linebacker Nic Scourton sustained an ACL injury, ruling him out for the season. The injury occurred on the first day of training camp, raising concerns about adherence to league protocols.
Nic Scourton, 21, joined the Panthers as a second-round pick and showed promise in his rookie year. He made 47 tackles, pressured the quarterback 37 times, hurried them 26 times, and recorded five sacks along with a forced fumble. These statistics, reported by Pro Football Focus, highlighted his potential before his unfortunate injury.
Following the incident, the NFL Players Association has started an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Scourton’s injury. Reports indicated that the Panthers are cooperating with this review.
A Panthers’ spokesperson confirmed that they are aware of the NFLPA’s inquiry and are cooperating with them regarding the practice session when Scourton was injured.said Mike Kaye from the Charlotte Observer.
Joe Person from The Athletic added that the NFLPA will review video footage of the session to verify if the Panthers adhered to the no-live contact rule during the initial five-day acclimation period specified in the collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
The current CBA mandates no live contact for the first five days of training camp. During this period, players can only engage in running and conditioning activities on the field. If the Panthers breached this guideline, they may face penalties such as fines, loss of future offseason training activity (OTA) days, or future draft picks.
