A shooting at a large party in Morgan Hill, California, resulted in one death and injuries to six others. The incident occurred on Saturday night in a rural area about 25 miles south of San Jose, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
The party was unsanctioned, with social media promotion drawing over 300 attendees. The shooting began shortly after 10 p.m. local time.
“This tragic and senseless violence is entirely unacceptable,” said Santa Clara County Sheriff Robert Jonsen.
Authorities first responded to reports of intoxicated people and bottle-throwing at passing vehicles. However, on arrival, they found the gathering in chaos due to the shooting.
Deputies administered first aid until emergency medical teams arrived, but one individual died at the scene. Others with gunshot wounds were taken to nearby hospitals.
Preliminary reports suggest a handgun was used, though no suspects have been identified publicly. Homicide detectives are treating the incident as isolated, but anticipate a thorough, detailed investigation.
Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Morgan Hill and Gilroy Police Departments, California Highway Patrol, and San Jose Police Department, responded to the scene.
