The suspect is identified as Abdul Ballout, a 21-year-old known to be part of Berlin’s Islamist scene. Born in Germany, his mother was naturalized in 2002. Ballout had previous convictions but details remain undisclosed. Currently, he has a suspended sentence of 1 year and 10 months.
Authorities conducted a search in Berlin’s Schöneberg district but found no one present. The suspect’s vehicle, heavily damaged, remained at the scene. Police issued a notice cautioning the public against direct contact, suggesting Ballout is armed and dangerous.
“Everything we see here points to us dealing with an Islamic terror attack,” stated Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt.
Investigators suspect Ballout acted with assistance since some victims suffered stab wounds, suggesting the involvement of others. Three individuals are critically injured, with more sustaining serious or minor injuries. The deceased victim has not been identified.
