San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was hurt in a car accident earlier this month and will have reduced involvement at the beginning of training camp, the team stated on Saturday, the day camp commenced.
Shanahan experienced a concussion, a broken nose, several fractured ribs, and hand injuries in the incident. This information comes from a source acquainted with the injuries, who spoke to The Associated Press anonymously due to a lack of authority to publicly discuss the details.
The team labeled the injuries as “non-life-threatening” and expressed gratitude towards first responders for their efforts at the scene of the accident last week.
The 49ers will start their initial practice on Sunday with assistant head coach/offensive line coach Chris Foerster leading the team. He will be aided by coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer.
Shanahan, now in his 10th season as head coach of the 49ers, is well-respected in the league for his offensive expertise. Under his leadership, San Francisco has reached the Super Bowl twice, following the 2019 and 2023 seasons. The team also made two additional appearances in the NFC Championship Game during the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Shanahan holds a 91-72 record in regular season and playoff games, ranking him third in franchise victories behind George Seifert (108) and Bill Walsh (102).
Last season, the 49ers overcame multiple significant injuries to close with a 12-5 regular season record and secured a playoff win. Shanahan achieved fifth place in the voting for the AP NFL Coach of the Year.
