Peter Farrelly’s new biographical drama, “I Play Rocky,” revisits the remarkable story behind Sylvester Stallone’s “Rocky.” Stallone, insistent on playing the lead role, only agreed to sell his screenplay under this condition. A trailer for “I Play Rocky” shows Anthony Ippolito as Stallone, showcasing his determination when movie producers initially offered immense sums for the script without him as the lead.
Stallone’s unwavering stance was rare. Film historian Dwight Cleveland described his situation as financially desperate, highlighting how unusual Stallone’s decision was to retain casting control despite lucrative offers. In the trailer, Stallone is depicted working as a valet, emphasizing his dire financial state during “Rocky’s” creation.
Entertainment attorney Tisha Morris noted that Stallone’s move was legally valid due to his ownership of the screenplay’s copyright. Yet, the risk was significant, as producers could have rejected his demand, leaving him without a sale or film.
“Stallone had the confidence his story was a true winner,” said Cleveland. “His refusal to compromise mirrored the determination of his ‘Rocky’ character.”
Sylvester Stallone emerged as a prominent figure following “Rocky’s” success. The role was initially overlooked by actors such as Ryan O’Neal, Burt Reynolds, and James Caan. Entertainment lawyer Marc Simon cited Stallone’s refusal to sell the script as a pivotal Hollywood example of principle over financial gain.
Simon further explained that, adjusted for today’s economy, the offers Stallone declined equate to over $2M. Stallone’s gamble on himself resulted in a lower budget for “Rocky,” aligning with United Artists’ desire to mitigate financial risk with a relatively unknown actor.
The 1976 release of “Rocky” became a cinematic triumph, both critically and commercially. Garnering 10 Academy Award nominations, including those for best actor and best original screenplay, it won three Oscars, affirming Stallone’s impact on cinema.
“Rocky”‘s legacy continues with Amazon preparing to release “I Play Rocky,” set to debut in November. Stallone himself isn’t part of the biopic, expressing surprise at its creation. Anthony Ippolito will play Stallone, with AnnaSophia Robb as Sasha Czack, his first wife, among other notable cast members.
