The assault resulted in one fatality and 16 injured individuals, according to local authorities. Beginning at approximately 1:30 a.m., the attack persisted for several hours, with ballistic missiles contributing to the chaos. In total, Russia launched 41 missiles and 125 attack drones across Ukraine overnight. The Ukrainian air force reported that among these were 25 ballistic missiles.
Ukrainian forces intercepted and suppressed 108 drones and 18 missiles during the attack. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated that most missiles targeted Kyiv, leading to widespread fires in five city districts. These fires damaged residential buildings, office and industrial sites, a dormitory, and various vehicles, as reported by Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.
“When the alarm started, we checked for ballistics, then moved into the corridor. Then it started exploding one missile after another,”
recounted Viktoria Shejko, 32, who was sheltering in her apartment corridor with her family. The psychological strain has been immense, with such attacks increasing in frequency.
Rescue efforts included pulling four individuals from a burning home in Sviatoshynskyi district and rescuing residents from a three-story building in Shevchenkivskyi. A fire in a nonresidential building was also contained while one person was later discovered deceased. Fires were addressed in Solomyanskyi, Desnianskyi, and Dnipro districts as well.
Russia claims the attack targeted Ukrainian military-associated sites, including drone production plants and missile parts facilities. Recent large-scale assaults on Kyiv coincide with Ukraine facing a shortage of Patriot air defense missiles, its most effective ballistic missile interceptors.
Ukraine managed to shoot down at least 17 ballistic missiles in Sunday’s attack, suggesting a potential replenishment of its Patriot interceptor stockpile. A previous major attack left Ukraine unable to intercept ballistic missiles, revealing air defense vulnerabilities.
U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated willingness to allow Ukraine to produce Patriot interceptor missiles. This move could enhance Kyiv’s defenses, yet the specifics and timing of this decision remain uncertain.
