Ossoff Criticized Over Foster Care Ad Amid Re-Election Campaign

Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia faces criticism from a top child welfare official in the state for claiming credit for actions related to the state’s foster care system. The controversy arose after Ossoff released a new campaign ad highlighting his role in investigating the troubled system.

Georgia Division of Family & Children Services (DFCS) Director Candice Broce condemned the ad titled “Our Kids” as the Democratic senator seeks re-election. The ad presents Ossoff’s investigation into the foster care system alongside Senator Marsha Blackburn, citing it as evidence of his commitment to protecting children and holding the system accountable. Broce, however, argues that Ossoff overstates his involvement.

Broce stated, “For five years, I’ve been in the trenches fighting for vulnerable children and foster care reform alongside thousands of DFCS workers. Trust us when we say Jon Ossoff is nowhere to be found.” She criticized Ossoff for not securing additional funding or federal support.

Ossoff’s Team Defends Actions

Ossoff’s campaign responded to Broce’s criticisms, labeling her as an “unqualified partisan political hack” and citing his oversight work that revealed significant issues in the foster care system. His team argued that such findings demonstrated the deep dysfunction at DFCS.

The campaign also noted instances where juvenile court judges accused Broce of inappropriate suggestions regarding the care of children with special needs. Broce denied these allegations, claiming they distorted the broader discussion on care for foster youth with complex needs.

Broce Calls for Genuine Solutions

Broce defended her qualifications and acknowledged existing challenges within Georgia’s foster care system. However, she contended that Ossoff highlighted these issues in hearings and reports without offering tangible solutions.

“If you’re going to beat us down, show up with something to make it better,” Broce said. She highlighted efforts to secure over $100 million in state funding for foster care from both Republicans and Democrats.

Ossoff’s Role in Federal Oversight

Ossoff’s team countered that it is not his responsibility to fix the state agency, and stated, “While Sen. Ossoff led oversight, passed an anti-trafficking law, and helped save foster care funding President Trump cut, unqualified partisan hack Broce whines it’s Senator Ossoff’s job to fix the state agency she leads.”

Broce contrasted Ossoff’s record with Georgia’s other senator, Democrat Raphael Warnock, emphasizing Warnock’s community-focused efforts.

Ossoff is running unopposed in the Democratic primary and seeks another term in November against Republican nominee Rep. Mike Collins. Meanwhile, Senator Warnock’s next re-election bid will be in 2028.
