President Donald Trump will travel to Ankara, Turkey, for the annual NATO summit. Last year, he pushed for increased defense spending from alliance members. This time, his aim is to enforce those commitments.
The White House announced that Trump will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa during the summit. These meetings occur as Ukraine tries to redirect Trump’s focus on its conflict with Moscow, and as he considers Syria’s role in the Middle East.
Efforts to Enforce NATO Spending
At last year’s NATO summit, Trump secured commitments from alliance members to boost their defense spending. His current mission in Turkey is to ensure compliance with these promises. Many NATO countries are moving towards allocating 5% of their GDP to defense over the next decade.
Trump’s focus remains on the imbalance of US defense spending compared to other NATO members. This is despite efforts from NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, who tried to reassure Trump about the alliance’s commitments during a recent Oval Office meeting.
FIFA and the Balogun Controversy
Trump intervened to lift a suspension on US soccer player Folarin Balogun. FIFA reversed its decision, allowing Balogun to play against Belgium in the World Cup. This move received Trump’s praise but drew criticism from Belgium’s team.
Trump’s call to FIFA President Gianni Infantino resulted in this extraordinary appeal. It marks a rare instance of a red card decision being overturned during a World Cup.
Reflecting Pool Repairs
The Trump administration will not seek new bids for repairing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum confirmed that current contractors would continue the repairs despite damage allegedly caused by vandals.
Burgum stated that the vandals caused significant damage, necessitating partial draining of the pool for repairs. He noted that the existing team did excellent work, indicating no need to involve new contractors.
Meetings with Global Leaders
Aside from meetings with Zelenskyy and al-Sharaa, Trump is scheduled to meet Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Trump will address the ongoing war in Ukraine, now in its fifth year. Before returning to the US, he is expected to hold a news conference in Turkey.
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly confirmed the schedule. Trump recently received congratulatory calls from both Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the anniversary of American independence.
