Emergency services worked to extinguish fires following Russian missile attacks in Kyiv, Ukraine, on Monday, July 6, 2026. Reports confirmed that the attacks killed at least 11 people and wounded another 60. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned of an impending large-scale assault. Rescue teams searched through the rubble of high-rise residential buildings hit in the attack.
These missile strikes followed a recent incident that killed 31 people, marking the deadliest attack in Kyiv this year. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed the strikes were retaliation for Ukraine’s long-range attacks, which have led to significant fuel shortages and pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin. Analysts noted Ukraine’s advances in drone technology have disrupted Russian supply routes and slowed the Russian army.
Despite these advancements, gaps remain in Ukraine’s air defense. Ukraine relies heavily on U.S. Patriot systems to intercept ballistic missiles. The global shortage of Patriot interceptors has intensified due to the conflict in the Middle East. On national television, Air Force spokesman Yurii Ihnat highlighted the deficit of interceptor missiles.
Zelenskyy addressed the shortfall in interceptions, emphasizing the need for more interceptor supplies from U.S. and European allies. He stated that as long as these supplies remain unused, Russia will continue its attacks on Ukrainian civilian structures. He urged a firm resolution to bolster air defenses during an upcoming NATO summit in Ankara.
Russia’s Defense Ministry targeted weapons factories and related infrastructure in Kyiv. They claimed to have struck drone, sea drone, armor, and missile manufacturing sites. The accuracy of these claims could not be independently confirmed. Russian attacks have often hit civilian areas, with over 16,000 Ukrainian civilian deaths reported by the United Nations.
“These are residential buildings. Places where people slept and lived their ordinary lives,” said Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s City Military Administration.
A residential building in the Podilskyi district partially collapsed. In the Darnytsia district, several multistory buildings suffered damage, with residents trapped under debris.
Reports surfaced of Ukrainian attacks in Russia and Crimea. An energy provider reported a blackout in Crimea due to “external impact.” Sevastopol’s leader, Mikhail Razvozhayev, linked Ukrainian strikes to power outages, later restored with backup equipment. Russia’s Yaroslavl region witnessed drone attacks, resulting in injuries. Governor Mikhail Yavrayev stated that over 70 Ukrainian drones were downed. The Astra news outlet suggested the attack targeted an oil refinery, causing a fire. Russia’s Defense Ministry reported the overnight downing of 519 Ukrainian drones.
