China Promotes Two New Generals Amid Military Shake-Up

China’s military has promoted two officers to the rank of general after a series of anti-corruption measures removed several leaders. This change seems aimed at securing the military’s loyalty to the Communist Party and its leader, Xi Jinping.

In a ceremony on July 3, 2026, President Xi, who also chairs the Central Military Commission (CMC), elevated Zhang Shuguang and air force commander Wang Gang to generals. These promotions might foretell a reorganization following the anti-corruption drive.

Zhang Shuguang takes on a new role as the head of the corruption division at the CMC, the military’s top governing body. This body, chaired by Xi, now has only Zhang Shengmin as an active vice-chair following corruption investigations.

With key members removed, including former vice chairs and the top general, the CMC appears primed for renewal. A new seven-member commission is anticipated in the fall of the next year as part of the commission’s five-year term conclusion.
