Four Arrested After 16 Children Found in Severe Conditions in Ohio

Authorities have arrested four individuals after discovering 16 children living in poor conditions in a rural Ohio home. The children required urgent medical attention, as announced by officials on Wednesday.

During a press briefing, Attorney General Andy Wilson revealed that the home, located in Hamden, Ohio, about 60 miles southeast of Columbus, was in a state unfit for living, especially for children. The conditions were described as unimaginable.

“Conditions you cannot even imagine people being in, let alone children being in,” said Wilson.

The children, removed from the home, were found in dire physical states. Two of the children were airlifted to Level 1 trauma centers due to the severity of their injuries. Wilson emphasized the urgency of the situation, indicating that a delay of even 24 hours could have led to multiple deaths.

Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain highlighted the squalor within the home, noting significant presence of feces and other hazardous materials. Cain shockingly observed that the livestock on the property were better cared for than the children.

The arrested individuals, identified as Gary Siders Sr., Gary Siders Jr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders, face 16 counts of second-degree child endangerment. They appeared in court via Zoom, where a judge entered not guilty pleas on their behalf and set bail at $300,000 each. Authorities have not clarified whether the children are directly related to the suspects but confirmed their ages vary from 18 months to 18 years, including both boys and girls.

The Vinton County Prosecutor, William Archer, clarified that this was an intra-family issue and not a case of human trafficking, assuring the community that other children were not at risk.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed his heartbreak upon learning about the conditions the children endured and the seriousness of their health issues. He acknowledged the efforts of law enforcement and child services in addressing the situation and stressed the dedication of Attorney General Wilson in seeking justice for the children.
