Adina Sash, known online as Flatbush Girl, uses her platform to support Orthodox women she sees as trapped in marriages. She has made a name for herself by publicly calling out men who refuse to grant a Jewish divorce, or ‘get’. This effort is vital as many in the Orthodox Jewish community view a religious divorce as more significant than a civil one.
In March, Sash found herself at the center of another case involving a man appearing under the pseudonym Nathan Gettisberg on a popular podcast to discuss Jewish divorce. Sash’s followers recognized him as Raphi Stein, a man entangled in a bitter separation, and reportedly refusing to grant his wife a get.
Sash, 38, took immediate action, focusing on naming and shaming the podcast network, Living L’Chaim, while seeking information from her 100,000 Instagram followers. She did not contact Stein or his wife, Adeena Kohn, directly. Instead, she leveraged her network to gather support and information while maintaining respect for Kohn’s privacy. A close friend of Kohn’s later informed Sash that Kohn wished to remain private.
For years, Sash has led campaigns to aid women known as agunot or ‘chained women’. She sometimes receives compensation for her advocacy, although in this specific instance she chose to crowdfund support independently. Her efforts continue to draw attention to the challenges faced by women in Orthodox Jewish divorces, highlighting the ongoing need for community and financial support.
