In France, approximately 1,000 excess deaths occurred between Wednesday and Saturday as temperatures soared to record levels, according to Santé Publique France. The national public health agency highlighted significant increases in deaths, notably in the western and central regions of the country.
Data revealed that 85% of the deceased were 65 or older, although rises in mortality were observed across all age groups. These figures were based on comparisons with average daily death rates from the previous two months.
The final number of excess deaths might take months to finalize, but for now, the toll is significantly lower than during the infamous 2003 heat wave, which saw an estimated 15,000 deaths.
The recent heat wave caused a rise in deaths in hospitals and nursing homes, with a noticeable spike in fatalities occurring at home, particularly around the Paris area. This underscores the necessity for supportive measures for isolated and lonely individuals, especially in urban settings.
Élisabeth Charrier, head of the national funeral federation, reported increased activity in mortuaries. The situation in Paris is particularly severe, with the city’s two primary facilities reaching full capacity.
