State Senator Patrick Joyce has expressed strong support for the live-in addiction recovery center at a 68-acre horse ranch in Crete. He credits the enthusiasm of its founder, Jim O’Connor, for his belief in the project’s success. Joyce regards O’Connor as highly energetic and believes the project will be one of the state’s most successful recovery programs.
O’Connor, who has openly discussed his own alcohol abuse recovery, inspired Joyce by sharing his experiences and commitment to founding Second Story Ranch on Bemes Road and South Klemme Road. Encouraged by Joyce, O’Connor presented his vision to other state colleagues, resulting in the state allocating $2 million for the ranch in the recent budget signed by Governor JB Pritzker. This funding is intended to begin construction of housing for staff and infrastructure necessary to support the program.
The ranch plans to include long-term housing for up to 30 men in recovery, a 7,000-square-foot lodge, and homes for project leaders. O’Connor has launched a public capital campaign to raise funds for these facilities. He acknowledges the responsibility of using state support effectively, expressing gratitude for grants and donations that have supplemented funding.
For additional financing, O’Connor is seeking $3 million through state-distributed opioid settlement funds to complete the lodge and residences for participants. If successful, the facility could be operational by 2027.
Currently, O’Connor is providing work opportunities at the ranch with the Recovery Community of Joliet, aiming to offer resources and temporary shelter to individuals after completing a 28-day inpatient program. The program will be Medicaid-eligible, free for participants, and linked with partnering organizations statewide.
