Portugal Faces a Challenging Path in the 2026 World Cup Knockouts

The group stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup have concluded, setting the stage for the Round of 32. Teams now know their matchups, and the excitement is building. Most of the favorites received favorable draws, though Portugal might not be so fortunate. Their journey could be coming to a premature end.

Portugal entered the tournament with high hopes. Cristiano Ronaldo, participating in his record sixth World Cup, had fans and analysts optimistic. Ronaldo made history by scoring in his sixth World Cup, netting twice in a 5-0 win over Uzbekistan. However, the other group matches raised concerns.

In their opening game, Portugal drew 1-1 with DR Congo. Joao Neves headed in an early goal, but Yoane Wissa equalized before halftime. In their final group matchup, a scoreless draw with Colombia meant Portugal finished second in Group K. This set them on a challenging knockout path.

First, Portugal faces Croatia in the Round of 32. Croatia, winners of their last two matches, boasts a technically strong and experienced lineup. They have a reputation for making deep tournament runs. Even if Portugal advances, they likely face Spain next, the pre-tournament favorites.

Spain, after a surprise draw with Cape Verde, regained their top form. They, alongside Mexico, have yet to concede a goal this World Cup. Moving beyond Spain would likely mean encounters with Belgium or the United States in the quarterfinals, further testing Portugal’s resilience.

Portugal showed signs of strain in their match against Colombia and now confront what might be the toughest schedule in the knockout rounds. Had they won Group K, their path would have included Ghana and possibly Switzerland, offering a more manageable route.
