Three firefighters lost their lives, and two others were injured, battling blazes on the Utah-Colorado border, as reported by the U.S. Wildland Fire Service. The incident occurred while the team was involved in combating the Knowles and Gore wildfires. These fires have combined with the Snyder fire, burning a total of 28,000 acres of land in western Colorado.
In recent weeks, wildfires have ravaged the arid Southwest, including regions in Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada. The fires have been fueled by unusually warm winter conditions, low snowpack, and high winds transforming the landscape into tinder.
Federal firefighters in Colorado faced sudden encroachment by flames, forcing them to seek shelter from the intense heat and smoke, as detailed by the Department of Interior’s statement.
At Grand Junction Regional Airport, a medevac helicopter arrived in challenging wind conditions early Sunday morning. Firefighters from various state and local agencies gathered to honor the fallen, awaiting the transfer of their bodies from the helicopter to the coroner’s office. The deceased, draped in flags, were solemnly carried from the helicopter by their fellow firefighters, who then transported them in coroner’s vans.
