MLB Commissioner Responds to Bible Verse Controversy

Senator Josh Hawley, representing Missouri, received a response from MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred regarding Bible verses on Pride Night caps by San Francisco Giants players. The commissioner confirmed that the players will not face discipline over the incident, which had sparked controversy.

Appearing on “The Will Cain Show,” Hawley expressed satisfaction with Manfred’s reply. He highlighted the acknowledgment from the commissioner, admitting fault and affirming players’ rights to religious expression. He quoted Manfred’s assurance, “No player will ever be disciplined or fined for their religious beliefs.”

Hawley emphasized his contentment, noting that the protection of religious liberty rights for players was a positive outcome. Despite having to reach out to MLB, Hawley feels the resolution is favorable.

Manfred communicated to Hawley that players across clubs are not mandated to wear uniforms reflecting political messaging. Moreover, there will be no discrimination based on religious beliefs, a point Hawley stresses as common sense.

Hawley stated the need for significant actions, like threatening Senate hearings and investigating the league, was absurd. But he welcomed MLB’s admission of a mistake. The commissioner’s response is a step forward in upholding the First Amendment within the sport.

On June 12 at Oracle Park, a Giants player chose not to wear the Pride Night hat, opting for the team’s standard colors instead. Meanwhile, other pitchers wrote Bible verses on their caps that caused debate, citing Genesis 9:12-16 as a particular passage symbolizing God’s covenant post-flood.

Initially, MLB deemed the writing as violating rules about altering uniforms. Manfred acknowledged the collective bargaining agreement with MLBPA prohibits such displays. However, Hawley and others argued religious freedom as a First Amendment right.

In his conclusion, Hawley called for a return to focusing on baseball rather than political debates. He discouraged what he referred to as “woke garbage.”
