In the Dominican Republic, authorities are assisting foreign tourists impacted by a significant fire that largely destroyed a luxury resort. This incident occurred at the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham resort in Bayahibe, a favored spot for tourists near the southeastern coast. The fire led to the evacuation of approximately 1,700 tourists and resulted in the death of an Italian citizen.
Assistance for Affected Guests
Amanda Santana, a hotel executive, reported that many guests lost important identification documents, including passports. The hotel is collaborating with embassies and foreign governments to ensure these tourists can return home. Additionally, hotel management is working with the police to streamline the process of filing necessary reports online.
Affected tourists have been relocated to other hotels in Punta Cana and Bayahibe to continue their stay. Despite the incident, General Manuel Méndez, director of the Emergency Operations Center, stated that tourism in the area persists as usual.
Investigation and Current Conditions
Authorities are currently examining the circumstances surrounding the death of the Italian tourist. The Emergency Operations Center noted that the fire spread quickly, influenced by wind and the resort’s thatch roof design. At the time, the hotel was operating at 84% occupancy.
