In Indianapolis, Andrean High School faced significant adversity after a tornado on June 11 damaged both the school and its baseball field. Despite these challenges, the baseball team rallied but fell short in the Class 3A state championship game.
Chase Nelson, a junior third baseman for Andrean, reflected on the loss, acknowledging the broader issues they faced beyond the game. He mentioned, “It’s been really sad. But we got a lot closer as a team because we wanted to do it for the school and the community. We got here, but we just couldn’t do it.” Ultimately, Andrean, ranked at the top, couldn’t secure another state title, losing 9-3 to Guerin at Victory Field. This victory marked Guerin’s first state championship win.
Andrean’s Coach Dave Pishkur gave credit to Guerin’s players, stating, “First and foremost, all the credit to that team. They were the far superior team today. There’s no question about it.” He praised Guerin’s strong lineup, noting their depth in hitters and the talent of their pitcher, Tate Troxell.
Chase Nelson contributed significantly during the game, going 2-for-4 with a run-scoring single in the third inning. He also played strong defense and pitched without allowing an earned run over two innings. Coach Pishkur acknowledged the team’s reliance on their pitching staff, even though they faced challenges during the game, including nine walked batters and three hit by pitch.
Tate Troxell, starting pitcher for Guerin and an Alabama recruit, limited Andrean’s opportunities by allowing only one run on four hits, striking out 12 batters.
Chase Nelson drew inspiration from his brother Tyler, a notable Andrean graduate who played a key role in past championship teams. Despite the outcome, Chase valued the experience and the opportunity to compete before a large audience.
Senior outfielder Luke Goben added a two-run double in the seventh inning as the 59ers maintained focus despite disruptions throughout the week, including practicing at various locations. Coach Pishkur expressed pride in the team’s efforts, despite the defeat.
Next season, Andrean will compete in Class 4A. Coach Pishkur remains optimistic, emphasizing player development and the readiness of younger athletes. “What we’ll have to do is we’ll have to really get better,” he said, indicating that underclassmen might rise to the occasion, even amid the competitive challenges of 4A baseball.
