Tennis enthusiasts may have a new ‘bad boy’ in Corentin Moutet, but his on-court antics might result in a lighter wallet. Following a victory at the HSBC Championships, Moutet’s center court interview included several explicit remarks, causing some controversy.
The incident, which was initially meant as humor, did not amuse everyone. This includes fans, officials, and the ATP itself. The ATP has since fined Moutet $40,000 for unsportsmanlike behavior.
‘Following the use of profane language by Corentin Moutet during his post-match interview after his first-round match at the HSBC Championships at The Queen’s Club in London this week, the player has received a fine of $40,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct,’ ATP officials stated.
Moutet plans to challenge the fine through an appeal that will be reviewed by the ATP Tour Compliance Committee. Officials confirmed no further comments will be provided during the appeal process.
Despite efforts to continue in the tournament, Moutet’s journey ended on Thursday after losing to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Even though Moutet earned approximately $23,000 from his first-round success, the fine diminishes his earnings.
Critics question whether this setback will influence Moutet’s behavior. Only time will determine if he chooses to reign in his outspoken image during future interviews.
