Review: ‘Untitled Vampire Play’ at Lookingglass Theatre

The Lookingglass Theatre’s latest show, Untitled Vampire Play, combines humor and vampire lore with a Chicago twist. The title could benefit from a more enticing name like Hey, Mom and Dad, My Fiancée is a Vampire! fitting the show’s comedic nature and basic premise.

The play, written by Kevin Douglas, centers around Chicagoan Dom (played by Jordan Arredondo), who introduces his girlfriend Val (Courtney Rikki Green) to his witty father, Louie (Kareem Bandealy), and his police officer mother, Alicia (Cynthia Kaye McWilliams). Val humorously claims she’s been alive for millennia and changed history through strategic bites. Their interaction acts as a metaphor for parental anxiety over their children’s unusual partners. The scene is enriched with Chicago references, offering a local flavor to the humor.

Val struggles with her vampire nature, attempting to live off blood bags. Meanwhile, her acolyte, Rose (Jin Park), is a gaming icon eager for Val’s help to escape her current state. The dynamic changes when Roderick (Walter Briggs), their brother from a past era, arrives, pursued by a vampire hunter resembling a quirky Javert. This introduces a clash between modern life and vintage vampire theatrics, with Roderick’s dramatic character adding depth to the story.

The production, directed by Devon De Mayo, offers a witty and vibrant experience. Alyssa Mohn’s set design supports the comedic and procedural elements, making it entertaining for summer audiences on Michigan Avenue. The actors deliver serious, engaging performances, with Green channeling a 1970s Wonder Woman ambiance, and Park’s character adding to the humor.

Audience members should be aware that the front rows might experience some playful “blood” splatter. It’s also suggested that the theater improves its signage to attract the passersby who miss out on the entertaining spectacle within the Water Tower Pumping Station.

Overall, Untitled Vampire Play is a lively show that effectively mixes classic vampire themes with everyday Chicago life. It’s on at the Lookingglass Theatre through July 12, with tickets ranging from $33 to $103.
