In Australia, where the housing market faces intense pressure, decommissioned electrical substations have become increasingly sought after as unique residence options.
In Sydney, a former electrical substation is being offered for sale. Though the interior features protruding metal, peeling paint, and caution signs due to uneven floors, a potential buyer described the property as ‘incredible.’
The property, covering around 1,280 square feet, requires significant renovation to become habitable. Located on a major route to Bondi Beach, it is listed at 1 million Australian dollars (approximately $701,075), which is under a third of the area’s median property price. An auction is scheduled for Tuesday.
This substation is part of a growing trend in and around Sydney, where such sites are up for sale. Power companies find they no longer need these locations due to grid upgrades, making them redundant. Despite their often small and neglected condition, these properties appeal to buyers in Australia’s costly real estate market.
Bruce Millar, who was examining the Bondi substation, expressed an interest in restoring the building. He was previously unaware of what was behind the brown shutter, despite frequent sightings, and found the inside impressive.
