Historic Kyiv Cathedral Damaged in Russian Strikes

The Dormition Cathedral in Kyiv, known for its historical and spiritual significance, faced significant damage after recent Russian missile and drone attacks. President Volodymyr Zelensky described the event as ‘one of the largest Russian crimes against Christian culture.’

On June 15, 2026, a relentless wave of Russian strikes hit several Ukrainian cities. The attacks resulted in the death of 11 people and injury to dozens more, according to the Ukrainian government. During these attacks, two drones targeted the historic monastic complex in Kyiv that houses the Dormition Cathedral. This complex is a vital pilgrimage stop for many Christians.

Visual evidence verified by The New York Times shows firefighters using cranes to combat the flames, with the orange glow of the fire highlighting the cathedral’s white exterior.

Throughout the ongoing conflict, many of Ukraine’s religious sites, museums, monuments, and libraries have suffered damage or destruction. Despite this widespread devastation, the assault on the Dormition Cathedral remains particularly notable. President Zelensky expressed this sentiment by highlighting the attack’s significant impact on Christian cultural heritage.

Ukraine’s Culture Ministry reported additional damage to several museums, a film studio, and an extensive costume collection during the strikes.
