Reflecting Pool Revamp Marred by Algae

After a $14.2 million repair effort, the Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial faced unexpected challenges. President Trump’s administration aimed to make the pool pristine but was thwarted by natural factors.

Shortly after the pool’s renovation, it was covered in algae, altering its intended appearance. The project attempted to address leaks and prevent algae blooms, especially before the nation’s 250th birthday celebration.

Katie Martin, a department spokeswoman, mentioned that workers were handling leftover algae from dormant supply lines. She expressed confidence that the pool would soon be algae-free, emphasizing Trump’s expertise in building.

The project initiated by President Trump included coating the pool’s floor with a waterproof material termed ‘American flag blue.’ Despite his claims that the site was unclean for years, the algae returned quickly.

To expedite the process, the administration awarded no-bid contracts to two specific vendors, citing urgency. Atlantic Industrial Coatings was tasked with sealing leaks and coating the floor, while Greenwater Services was responsible for an enhanced water-purification system.

Atlantic Industrial Coatings completed its assignment by June 4, and the pool was promptly refilled. Whether Greenwater Services’ purification system is operational remains unclear.

Meanwhile, workers from the National Park Service, along with Pearl Purity Water Solutions, attended to the algae situation. Their efforts targeted clearing algae blooms from the pool’s surface.

Visitors provided mixed reactions. Some, like Bonnie Garvin from Georgia, found the pool’s current state non-problematic, since they weren’t swimming in it. Others, like Jessica Lea from Oregon, expressed disappointment, noting that the pool appeared swampy and lacked its renowned reflecting quality.

The Reflecting Pool, which stands between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, remains a significant site despite current issues. The efforts continue to ensure its maintenance and appeal to visitors.
