Bosnian Band Dubioza Kolektiv’s Anthem Fuels World Cup Hopes

The Bosnian band Dubioza Kolektiv has reimagined their song to support Bosnia-Herzegovina’s World Cup dreams. Originally called “USA,” the song’s new title, “I Am From Bosnia, Take Me to America,” reflects aspirations tied to soccer. In just three weeks, the music video garnered nearly 2 million views on YouTube.

Evolution of a Song

The band’s bassist, Vedran Mujagić, explains how the song has developed over the years. Initially a satire on immigration and the American Dream, it has now morphed into an anthem for soccer fans. Bosnia’s unexpected World Cup qualification was bolstered by these lyrics, with fans displaying them on banners.

As keyboardist Brano Jakubović notes, the song transformed from a joke to a meaningful rallying cry for the supporters. They adopted the song, giving it new significance, which Jakubović sees as a high point for any musical creation.

Shifting Lyrics and Impact

The original “USA” song is catchy, tackling themes of emigration and disillusionment. The updated version is mostly in Bosnian and focuses on soccer. Jakubović shares that the song addresses national traumas, such as a controversial offside goal against Nigeria in 2014. This is not just about soccer for Bosnia; it’s a symbol of unity in a politically divided country.

For their practice base, the Bosnian team opted for Sandy, Utah, with games against Switzerland and Qatar scheduled in the US. Mujagić highlights that many players have ties to the US or the diaspora.

Community and Continuation

Outside Bosnia, St. Louis hosts a vast Bosnian community. Admir Hodzic founded a supporter group called BH Loyals, embodying the spirit of the song “USA.” He notes that while the US offers opportunities, it requires resilience through challenging periods.

Fans remain connected to Dubioza Kolektiv’s music, often choosing the original “USA” version during events. The song resonates deeply, capturing the journey and experiences of Bosnians both at home and abroad.
