Mexico City’s legendary stadium is set to host the opening match of the World Cup for the third time. The stadium has undergone extensive renovations worth nearly $200 million to prepare for the event. Its seating capacity has been increased to accommodate 87,500 spectators.
The collaboration between Mexico, Canada, and the United States in co-hosting this World Cup is significant. Despite recent tensions in diplomatic relations, the three nations have emphasized unity in their joint effort.
Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau highlighted the opportunity for global cooperation. Similarly, Enrique Peña Nieto, Mexico’s former president, stressed the deep connection between the three countries. Even President Trump, during his first term, recognized the shared achievement in winning the World Cup bid.
On Thursday, the World Cup will commence in Mexico with the national team facing South Africa. This match is the first of 104 games planned across North America, taking place in cities like Vancouver, Toronto, New York, Kansas City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara.
