John Mellencamp, Jay Leno, and Whitney Cummings will speak at a ceremony honoring Bill Maher with the Mark Twain Award for American Humor on June 28. This event will take place at the Kennedy Center.
The Kennedy Center sent an email detailing packages for attendees, with options from $99 for a seat to $1,500 for comprehensive package deals. This announcement indicated a shift, as it was sent from the ‘Kennedy Center,’ rather than the previously used ‘Trump Kennedy Center.’
A federal judge recently ruled that President Donald Trump’s appointed board of trustees acted illegally when renaming the venue. Originally, Congress named the center for President John F. Kennedy in 1964. U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper emphasized that only Congress could change its name. Despite suggestions to appeal, the center started following directions to remove Trump’s name.
During Trump’s term, the Kennedy Center became a focal point for removing ‘woke’ influences. This led to significant leadership changes and saw major events like the Kennedy Honors ceremony. Many performers, such as Issa Rae and Renée Fleming, canceled appearances in protest.
Bill Maher, known for being an independent voice, becomes the 27th recipient of the Twain Award. Previous honorees include Leno, Steve Martin, and Tina Fey. Maher has often clashed with Trump, though he resonates with some Republicans for his criticism of ‘woke’ Hollywood.
Additional attendees at the Twain ceremony will include Louis C.K., who has been touring again post-controversy, and ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, known for his outspoken sports commentary.
