The Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner is facing attention as new allegations surface just before Tuesday’s primary. Voter opinions vary on how these controversies will impact their choices.
One resident, Jeff from Waterloo, Maine, expressed concerns, saying selecting Platner based on minimal standards is not ideal. As a conservative, he feels Platner’s baggage doesn’t align with winning prospects for Democrats.
“It’s not a good situation,” Jeff remarked, adding that Platner’s baggage is too much.
Another resident, Sheila from Harrison, Maine, says the scandals significantly influence her decision. She believes Platner lacks the necessary judgment and standards expected from Congressional members.
“Anyone who represents us needs to hold higher standards,” Sheila stated.
A few days before the primary, accusations from former girlfriends emerged via The New York Times, describing Platner’s behavior involving heavy drinking and violent episodes. Platner denies these claims.
Platner, a Marine and Army veteran and an oyster farmer, started his Senate campaign in August. His campaign has since been marred by controversies, including sexually explicit texts, Nazi-linked tattoos, and disrespectful online comments targeting a Purple Heart recipient.
Ellen from Acton, Maine, expressed indifference toward the allegations.
“When it comes to my vote, no,” Ellen said, trusting Platner’s wife to best judge his character during difficult times.
Despite recent scrutiny, Ellen expressed confidence in Platner’s capabilities, stating her expectation for him to act as a strong representative for Maine.
Meanwhile, Jane from Wells, Maine, confirmed her continued support for Platner, expressing admiration for him.
Jessica from Biddeford, Maine, chooses to ignore news surrounding the candidate, believing the media detracts from vital issues.
“We’re better together as one instead of fighting each other over things that don’t matter,” Jessica opined.
Platner faces David Costello and Janet Mills in the primary on June 9. The winner will challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November.
