President Donald Trump plans to attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals in New York City, according to Fox News’ Kayleigh McEnany. Trump, an avid Knicks fan, received a personal invitation from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, who noted the shared interests with excitement. This appearance marks another in a series of major sporting events Trump has attended while in office. Additionally, plans are set to host a UFC fight at the White House on June 14.
There is ongoing discussion regarding the Major League Baseball (MLB) salary cap, and President Trump has expressed his strong support for its implementation. In an interview with OutKick’s Dan Zaksheske aboard Air Force One, Trump emphasized the necessity of a salary cap in professional sports, stating, “If you don’t have a salary cap, you don’t have a sport. They can’t help themselves.” He noted that the NFL, NHL, and NBA all have salary caps, leaving MLB as the only major North American professional league without one.
Trump remarked on the missed opportunity for MLB to implement a salary cap earlier, citing his administration’s legislative efforts resembling a salary cap in professional leagues to counteract significant financial losses faced by major schools. His comments highlighted the importance of financial regulations in sports, asserting, “Major League Baseball — it’s shocking, frankly, that they didn’t put a cap on years ago. They had a chance to do a cap, and they blew it.”
The MLB and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) are currently in the initial stages of collective bargaining, with a recent proposal introducing a salary cap of $245.3 million for 2027. This discussion comes in light of significant payroll disparities, as the Los Angeles Dodgers held the highest Opening Day payroll at $415.2 million, contrasting sharply with the Miami Marlins at $81.8 million.
