Incident Overview
A Houston man, Abdulrahman Oluwatumike Oriyomi, is facing serious charges after allegedly using a fake boarding pass at George Bush Intercontinental Airport. The event occurred on May 18 and led to the delay of a United Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles.
Details of the Incident
According to a criminal complaint filed in Harris County, Oriyomi is charged with impairing or interrupting the operation of a critical infrastructure facility. The flight, filled with passengers, experienced a three-hour delay due to the incident.
Prosecutors have requested a $25,000 bond, citing the significant impact of the delay. Agencies like the Houston Police Department, the FBI, Houston Airports, and the Transportation Security Administration responded to the event.
Actions Taken by Oriyomi
Oriyomi reportedly attempted to board United Flight 469 by passing through a TSA checkpoint. After failing to scan a boarding pass at one gate, he approached another gate when airline employees were occupied. He then boarded the plane unnoticed.
Aboard the Aircraft
A passenger reported that Oriyomi initially took a seat next to her but later moved around. A flight attendant discovered he didn’t have an assigned seat after checking the passenger manifest, which did not list his name.
Plane Returns and Investigation Unfolds
Following this discovery, the plane returned to the gate, activating a response from various law enforcement and security agencies. Investigations found the boarding pass image on Oriyomi’s phone fraudulent, missing key details and a QR code.
Officials concluded Oriyomi couldn’t have acquired a legitimate boarding pass without purchasing a reservation first.
Security Measures and Court Proceedings
Prosecutors have asked for specific bond conditions, including Oriyomi surrendering any passports, avoiding airports, refraining from firearm possession, and possibly undergoing electronic monitoring.
As of the latest information, it remains unclear if these bond conditions have been imposed. Court records do not yet identify an attorney representing Oriyomi.
Additional Information
United Airlines and involved agencies have not yet commented on the situation. The case is ongoing in Harris County’s 180th District Court.
