For eight long months, Patty Morin lived with the fear that her daughter’s killer might evade justice. She recalled a poignant moment when a detective approached her and shifted her perspective. Two months later, Victor Martinez-Hernandez was in custody.
Now, 16 weeks into the investigation of Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, Morin offers advice to another family confronting the same uncertainty. She expressed concern, saying, “They have nothing — nothing they’ve shared with us.” Her daughter was brutally killed on a Maryland trail by a suspect who fled from El Salvador after reportedly committing another murder. He was later accused of committing heinous acts in California, leading police to his capture in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Rachel Morin was murdered on August 5, 2023, and Monday marked four months since 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie went missing without any identified suspects. Guthrie is the mother of Savannah Guthrie, “Today” co-host. Despite the lack of progress, Morin remained hopeful. She recalled a detective who remained confident in solving the case. Morin said of him, “He encouraged me not to let emotions take over.”
Morin now shares this optimism with the Guthrie family. She acknowledges the prolonged nature of investigations, sometimes taking up to a year for DNA results. In the Guthrie case, authorities are analyzing complex DNA samples, though no suspect has emerged yet. A mixed DNA sample and a hair sample are being closely examined by the FBI. New technology is being incorporated, including advanced surveillance tools and Bluetooth signal detectors. A reward exceeding $1.2 million is offered for information leading to a breakthrough.
Morin emphasizes the importance of sharing information, even seemingly minor details, as it might be crucial. She supports families struggling with uncertainty and motivates them to maintain hope throughout the investigative process.
For those who can help, contact 1-800-CALL-FBI or Tucson’s anonymous tip line at 1-520-882-7463. “No tip is too small,” Morin stated, underscoring the importance of collective effort in unraveling these complex cases.
