Health Officials Warn of Rabid Bat Found in California Neighborhood

A rabid bat discovered near a neighborhood in California has led health officials to caution residents against interacting with wildlife. They strongly recommend seeking immediate medical care if exposure is suspected.

On May 26, authorities found a bat close to Palo Verde Common in South Fremont, positioned near a sidewalk and accessible to both pedestrians and animals, according to Fremont Police Department.

Alameda County Vector Control confirmed the bat tested positive for rabies. Although they are investigating, the agency noted there are no known cases of human or animal exposures linked to this bat at present.

Rabies is a fatal disease caused by a virus affecting the brain and nervous system. Police issued this reminder, underscoring the importance of early intervention with rabies vaccines, which can prevent the disease if administered promptly post-exposure.

Authorities advised those who might have been in contact with the bat to reach out to the Alameda County Public Health Acute Communicable Disease Program at 510-267-3250 and to immediately consult a medical professional.

The public is cautioned to avoid contact with bats and other rabies-carrying wildlife such as skunks, foxes, coyotes, and raccoons.

The Fremont Police Department emphasized the risks to unvaccinated pets, noting, Unvaccinated dogs and cats are considered to be at medium to high risk of contracting and potentially spreading the rabies virus.

If residents encounter sick or dead animals, they are advised not to touch them but to report unusual behavior to Fremont Animal Services or the Alameda County Public Health Department.

Officials strongly advise against handling bats found in residential areas. They recommend several preventive measures such as ensuring pets receive regular rabies vaccinations and are kept within property bounds. They also suggest removing outdoor food sources to deter wildlife.
