President Trump’s Rally Proposal
President Donald Trump has suggested that he might lead a rally in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday. This follows his claim that scheduled performers were experiencing performance anxiety, a condition he termed “the yips.” Trump proposed that instead of having “highly paid, Third Rate ‘Artists,’” he could deliver a speech, positioning himself as “the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World.”
In a detailed post on Truth Social, Trump stated that artists slated for the event voiced concerns about performing. He hinted at stepping in himself, claiming larger audiences than Elvis Presley in his prime, and noted he does so without playing the guitar.
Artists Withdraw from Freedom 250
Several artists booked for the concert series tied to the president’s Freedom 250 celebration have withdrawn. This shift has notably affected the event’s lineup. Organizers have emphasized the festival’s goal of commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States. However, controversy surrounds which musicians will participate.
Of those initially featured in the promotional materials, only three still intend to perform. Newsweek contacted Freedom 250 via email for comments on Saturday afternoon.
Additional Semiquincentennial Celebrations
Other semiquincentennial events include a UFC card hosted by Trump at the White House on Flag Day, June 14. This coincides with his 80th birthday. The event will feature a 5,000-seat arena with a cage on the South Lawn.
Trump’s Vision for the Rally
Trump expressed interest in transforming the event into an “AMERICA IS BACK Rally” at the same location. He suggested restricting attendance to “Great Patriots.” He emphasized his preference for being surrounded by “Happy People, Smart People, Successful People, and People that know how to WIN,” rather than unhappy “‘Artists’ that get paid far too much money.”
Trump has framed the potential rally as an occasion for national revival, asserting that “two years ago, the United States was DEAD” but now is the “HOTTEST Country anywhere in the World.” He described the possible event as a “Wild and Beautiful Celebration of America.”
In his message, Trump ordered his representatives to explore holding the “AMERICA IS BACK Rally” on Wednesday, at the same time and location in Washington, D.C.
Background on Freedom 250
Freedom 250 is a public-private organization leading the celebrations of the U.S.’s 250th anniversary. It includes a 16-day festival known as the Great American State Fair on the National Mall. The fair aims to be a central part of the America250 celebrations with free admission and diverse programming.
The organization describes it as a World’s Fair-style event meant to “honor our history and engage all Americans.” It features live entertainment, exhibits, military demonstrations, and representation from all states and territories. Although promoted as nonpartisan, reports have linked it to the Trump administration, sparking controversy as many artists claimed they were unaware of any political affiliations.
Despite these withdrawals, Freedom 250 continues to market the fair as a national unification celebration. It stresses its mission to “uplift and unite America” during this semiquincentennial year.
Rachel Reisner, a Freedom 250 spokesperson, affirmed to Newsweek in an email that the focus remains on signature events that honor history and welcome all Americans to commemorate this historic milestone.
