Sarah Urist Green is redefining how we perceive creativity. She asserts that being creative isn’t essential for making art. You don’t need to identify as an artist to create. You don’t require a degree or fancy materials. Simply start making art.
In her book, You Are An Artist, Green aims to remove fear and complex decision-making from the creation process. She believes exercises can help you discover what kind of art resonates with you. Her work with contemporary artists on The Art Assignment, a PBS series, has led to creating a workbook of projects inspired by artists’ methods.
Green emphasizes working with what you have and being inventive with readily available materials. Below are five projects from her book that anyone can try, regardless of age or artistic background:
- Project 1: Description of the art project.
- Project 2: Description of the art project.
- Project 3: Description of the art project.
- Project 4: Description of the art project.
- Project 5: Description of the art project.
You can send a photo of your creation to NPR at [email protected]. You Are An Artist will be available on April 14 from Penguin Random House, and pre-orders are open now.
