49ers Manage McCaffrey’s Workload Amid Injury Concerns

Two years ago, the San Francisco 49ers experienced a rough patch when star running back Christian McCaffrey faced multiple injuries. He missed 13 games, contributing to the team’s 6-11 record and missing the playoffs in 2024. Given this history, fans’ nerves are on edge whenever there’s a hint of an injury.

Last season, McCaffrey’s performance was outstanding. He played in every game and amassed 2,126 yards from scrimmage, with 1,202 rushing and 924 receiving yards. He scored 17 touchdowns, aiding in the 49ers’ impressive 12-5 record. They nearly clinched the NFC West.

The Importance of Caution

Recognizing his importance, the 49ers prioritize caution with McCaffrey. Recently, he missed a practice session, leading to speculation about a possible injury. However, it was part of a strategic plan to manage his workload.

“The way the media works now, it’s a firestorm,” McCaffrey stated. “But this was planned from the start, to ramp up, get nine or 10 practices, reset, and then ramp up again. I feel great and fresh, ready for the season.”

Running Back Depth

The potential depth of the 49ers’ running back lineup has been a topic of discussion this offseason, given McCaffrey’s history with injuries. The team has shown confidence in rookie Kaelon Black, who delivered a strong performance with 1,040 yards and 10 touchdowns last season at Indiana. He is likely to serve as McCaffrey’s primary backup as the season begins.

Jordan James is back in practice after missing time due to a rib injury. Meanwhile, third-year player Isaac Guerendo is recuperating from a torn pectoral muscle and is not expected back for a few weeks.

The 49ers addressed injury concerns by signing veteran running backs Khalil Herbert and Zamir White. They are mainly considered additional training camp options and might not make it to the regular 53-man roster.
