World Humanoid Robot Games Opens With Spectacular Performances

The inaugural World Humanoid Robot Games commenced with an impressive opening ceremony in Beijing. Humanoid robots thrilled attendees by dancing to hip-hop, executing martial arts moves, and playing instruments such as keyboards, guitars, and drums.

The competition, set to start on Friday, features over 500 humanoid robots organized into 280 teams from 16 countries, including the United States, Germany, and Japan. The robots will compete in sports such as soccer, running, and boxing. China’s focus on advancing humanoid robots with artificial intelligence is evident through this event.

Prior to the ceremony, a robot rehearsed the 100m race, showcasing the athletic prowess to be expected. During the ceremony, robots displayed skills in soccer and boxing. Some managed to score goals after several attempts, imitating sports events with excitement, including cheers and backflips. Fashion also took center stage, as robots modeled trendy hats and clothing alongside human models. However, a robot model experienced a fall and was assisted off the stage by humans.

Human performers also joined the spectacle, leaping above robots styled as terracotta warriors. The event marks a collaborative effort between various teams including those from robot companies and institutions like Tsinghua University and Peking University, along with participation from three middle schools.

The People’s Daily quoted a government official, remarking that each robot participant is “creating history.” The games span three days, concluding on Sunday. Ticket prices for the public range from 180 yuan ($25) to 580 yuan ($80).
