A woman from Northampton, England, made an exciting discovery at her local thrift store, realizing she had stumbled upon a valuable find. Lisa Davies, who enjoys searching for treasures, began her thrifting journey back in Christmas 2024 during a challenging time in her life.
“It was mentally tough for me, and spending time in charity shops was incredibly beneficial,” Davies shared with Newsweek. Since then, it has become her main hobby. Shopping for collectibles is known to have mental health benefits, as noted by neuroscientist Shirley M. Mueller in Psychology Today. Collecting can alleviate stress, enhance concentration, bolster cognitive abilities, and foster social interactions, along with providing a sense of accomplishment and purpose.
Davies was visiting a thrift store she frequents when she spotted a unique mug on a shelf. “I go to the store weekly. It’s nearby, and the staff are wonderful,” she said. Seeing the mug, Davies felt she had uncovered something significant. Piece after piece revealed itself, leading her to a desirable collection.
Davies came across 11 pieces of Emma Bridgewater pottery. Recognized for its handmade and hand-decorated quality in Stoke-on-Trent, England, Emma Bridgewater pottery features distinct patterns like Polka Dot and Pink Hearts. These items often include limited-edition designs that are highly coveted by collectors.
Davies was thrilled with her find. “I paid £13.75, which is roughly $18,” she noted. “If sold, I estimate a return between £150 and £200 ($200-$270). Purchasing these new would be significantly higher, with mugs alone costing £25 ($34) each.” Among her finds was a still-labeled Easter set, valued at approximately £70 ($95).
A fan of Emma Bridgewater pottery, Davies eagerly searches for second-hand pieces. “Discovering those pieces at such prices felt like the dream charity shop haul,” she exclaimed.
Davies shares her thrift-store discoveries through her Instagram account, @theoldbag. She relishes the pursuit as much as the finds. “It’s the hunt, the thrill of discovering that perfect piece,” she explained. Unlike shopping with specific intentions, thrifting encourages an open-minded approach, allowing items to reveal themselves.
Her advice for others seeking similar success is to remain consistent. “Visit the same shops regularly,” she advised. Familiarize yourself with the staff, who might help point out desirable pieces. “Do a second sweep of the store before leaving; quiet moments may reveal missed treasures.” Search thoroughly, and you’ll soon develop skill in finding exceptional items.
