Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany has moved closer to taking the governor’s role for the Republican Party in Wisconsin. Tiffany, known for his hard-right stance and support from former President Donald Trump, secured the Republican gubernatorial nomination. He defeated medical service technician Andy Manske, as reported by the Associated Press.
Tiffany is likely to face the Democratic contender, state Rep. Francesca Hong, in the upcoming general election. Hong is expected to win the Democratic nomination. The outcome will determine the successor of Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, who chose not to pursue a third term. This race is seen as a significant opportunity for the GOP to flip the governor’s office.
Hong, linked with the Democratic Socialists of America, advocates for guaranteed paid leave and raising the state’s minimum wage from $7.25 to $20 per hour. She also supports a one-year halt on building AI data centers in Wisconsin. Her past controversial social media statements called for police defunding, but she has since retracted these views.
“I’m not defunding the police, not abolishing police. I am serious about public safety,” Hong stated while engaging with voters.
Hong stirred national attention due to a past tweet from 2020, suggesting the cancellation of Thanksgiving to avoid celebrating colonialism. However, she later revised her position, expressing that Thanksgiving is her “favorite holiday.” Addressing her prior tweets, she remarked on her growth and learning over time.
Republicans strategically supported Hong in the primaries through pro-GOP super PACs, viewing her as a weaker opponent. Tiffany, discussing Wisconsin’s political stance, declared, “We’ll be the place that stops socialism.” Tiffany, who has roots on a dairy farm, emphasized his genuineness and authenticity despite disagreements over some policies.
