William Shatner, at 95 years old, recently shared a health scare that was nearly unnoticed. He first encountered a lump that a doctor dismissed as a salivary gland issue. However, seeking a second opinion led to a serious discovery: stage 4 malignant melanoma.
On a segment of “CBS Mornings,” Shatner recounted how a friend, also a doctor, pressed for further examination of the lump. This prompted a critical diagnosis and the need for urgent removal of the cancerous growth.
According to the oncologist, Shatner faced a grave situation. The cancer had spread to his brain and possibly his lung, identified as stage four.
Undergoing surgery to excise the tumor, Shatner also completed two years of immunotherapy treatment. However, his battle with cancer intersected with another—his daughter Melanie Shatner Gretsch’s own fight against cancer.
Melanie discovered a lump in her breast nearly a year before her father’s diagnosis. Despite a previous mammogram showing no issues, she felt compelled to investigate further. Her persistence led to a diagnosis of HER2-positive breast cancer that had moved to lymph nodes in her chest.
The aggressive nature of the cancer required immediate and extensive treatment, involving chemotherapy, radiation, a double mastectomy, and a year of immunotherapy. During this challenging time, Melanie leaned on her father for support, especially during daunting moments.
By the end of 2024, both Shatner and Melanie were declared cancer-free. The news marked an emotional point for them, particularly when Melanie informed her father, an experience she found unforgettable.
Despite these health challenges, Shatner remains active with new projects, including books, a podcast, and music endeavors. His journey continues to inspire as he pursues his passions.
