The White House has responded to musician John Mellencamp’s recent comments about President Donald Trump’s decision to rename the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America.” Mellencamp made these remarks during his performance in Holmdel, New Jersey, part of his “Dancing Words” tour.
During the show, Mellencamp paused his performance to criticize the name change initiative, expressing his disapproval while singing his hit song “Pink Houses.” He commented, “The Gulf of Mexico? Is that right? It’s not the Gulf of America? What a stupid idea,” highlighting his skepticism of the executive order.
Mellencamp is known for using his platform to address political and societal issues. His song “Pink Houses,” released in 1983, is famous for exploring themes of class and inequality within the American dream, despite its initial perception as a patriotic anthem.
Responding to Mellencamp’s comments, Davis Ingle, a spokesperson for the White House, shared a statement with Fox News Digital. Ingle stated, “Nobody in their right mind cares what out-of-touch, woke Hollywood celebrities have to say,” dismissing Mellencamp’s criticism as out-of-touch.
The controversy began after President Trump was seen holding a “Gulf of America” hat on the South Lawn of the White House in April 2025. This sparked widespread discussions, including reactions from other celebrities like Robert De Niro and Bruce Springsteen, who have also recently voiced their opinions against Trump.
Mellencamp’s “Pink Houses” has remained one of his signature hits, reaching No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was reportedly inspired by Mellencamp observing a man sitting outside a small pink house on an Indiana highway, sparking the famous line, “Ain’t that America.”
