This action occurred days after the police chief’s resignation, causing public outcry and claims of government overreach. The Barrackville Police Department announced on Facebook, ‘Effective immediately, the entire Barrackville Police Department has been relieved of duty by the Mayor and City Council.’ They expressed gratitude to the community for their support and acknowledged the privilege of serving the town.
Former Police Chief Zachary Freeburn, who had been appointed in December 2025, recently resigned, intensifying the ongoing issue. His appointment highlighted his credentials, including graduation from the West Virginia State Police Academy and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. His resignation led to Sgt. Hunt being designated as the officer in charge, ensuring continued operations.
However, soon after, the department itself was relieved of duty. Information from Freeburn’s resignation letter provides insight into the situation. He claimed there was pressure from the town council to implement changes that he believed violated state law. His concerns about a hostile work environment and lack of transparency at town hall prompted his resignation. He hoped his departure would bring attention to the issues in question.
Sgt. Hunt reported discovering the police evidence room had been accessed without officer presence. He alleged that during a discussion with Mayor Tom Straight, Councilmember Alex Neville admitted to taking a set of police keys. Following these allegations, Hunt and another officer were relieved of duty. He intends to seek whistleblower protections.
Following Freeburn’s resignation, community members launched a petition advocating for his reinstatement. They argued that his leadership had earned community trust and called for transparency from town leaders. Despite efforts to organize a town council meeting to address concerns, it was canceled, citing insufficient information on agenda items.
Marion County Sheriff Roger Cunningham assured residents that the sheriff’s office will continue responding to calls in Barrackville. Town officials have not publicly explained the department’s dismissal or addressed the allegations made by former officers.
