Weather Delays World Cup Match Between Mexico and Ecuador

The highly anticipated round-of-32 World Cup match between Mexico and Ecuador has faced a delay due to severe weather in Mexico City. Originally scheduled for a 9 PM ET start, the game will now kick off an hour later at 10 PM ET. Thunderstorms and lightning strikes near Estadio Azteca necessitated the delay. This has affected pre-match warm-ups, leading FIFA to confirm the revised start time.

Interestingly, FIFA has also announced that there will be no hydration breaks during the match. Safety remains a priority, with a statement from FIFA thanking fans for their understanding.

The weather delay has created an unexpected party atmosphere in the stadium. Fans are taking the opportunity to purchase beverages, while the stadium DJ keeps the crowd entertained with music, notably the well-loved Argentine rock classic “De Musica Ligera” by Soda Stereo.

The game holds special significance for Ecuador. The Azteca stadium was once home to Ecuadorian striker Christian ‘Chucho’ Benitez, who passed away in 2013. Former teammates, including Antonio Valencia and Jefferson Montero, have paid tribute and expressed emotional ties to the venue.

In terms of team dynamics, Mexico’s squad features five players from Club Guadalajara. Obed Vargas, young midfielder from Atletico Madrid, expressed hope for utilizing home advantage against Ecuador, acknowledging Ecuador’s speed and strength.

Mexico manager Javier Aguirre has made notable lineup decisions, including starting 17-year-old Gilberto Mora. The tactical plan aims to secure the midfield with Erik Lira and Luis Romo. Ecuador, unchanged from their recent win against Germany, will field Nilson Angulo with wingers supporting striker Enner Valencia.

Despite the atmospheric conditions, fans are urged to stay seated and enjoy the continued entertainment as the excitement builds for the delayed kick-off.
